The VDOT Gainesville Improvement Project in Prince William County, Virginia is Making Good Progress
If you live in the Gainesville, Haymarket or Bristow area of Prince William County in Virginia, you have been impacted by the VDOT Gainesville Improvement Project. This project—the new Route 29/Linton Hall interchange—is one of the largest construction projects currently underway in Virginia.

For the past several years, the community has experienced traffic delays due to intersection lights, daily trains, Route 29 distance travelers and rapid growth to the region. This change is welcomed.

A series of major improvements nearby have already been completed including the widening of 2.5 miles of I-66 to eight lanes from the Route 234 Bypass to the Route 29 Exit in Gainesville. While the Gainesville Improvement Project isn't scheduled for completion until 2015, a major change in traffic routing is already scheduled for this month.
At a recent meeting hosted by the VDOT and Shirley Contracting Co., citizens learned about the changes which are tentatively scheduled for August 16th to 18th, 2013. The project has entered Stage 2 which will shift Route 29 traffic heading towards I-66 (one direction) over the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The transition will cause temporary delays but the improvement will be felt before the busy school year starts again.

The centerpiece of the Project is a pair of overpasses: one carrying Route 29 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, and one carrying Linton Hall and Gallerher roads over the railroad and Route 29.
To further improve traffic flow, Route 29 will be widened to six lanes and eliminate driveway entrances and two traffic signals between I-66 and Virginia Oaks Drive.
